Read More When you say Los Angeles, people would always remember the Hollywood Sign. It’s probably L.A.’s most famous attraction. This world-renowned sign is 45 feet tall and 352 feet wide. The word “HOLLYWOOD” sits on the peak of the Santa Monica Mountains. It was not really meant to be landmark because originally, it was built in 1923 as a business advertisement for Woodruff and Shoults. It was formerly known as HollywoodLand Sign when it was designed by Thomas Fisk Goff. Over the course of time, the sign deteriorated and even the official caretaker accidentally damaged the letter H. So, in 1949, Los Angeles formed a committee to protect and preserve the cultural landmark. The Hollywood Sign was repaired and the officials decided to drop the L.A.ND. Thus, what you see now when you explore L.A. is just “Hollywood.” On February 7, 1973, the sign was listed as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. There was another restoration project initiated by magazine publisher Hugh Hefner in 1978. Prominent figures such as Andy Williams and Alice Copper showed their support by sponsoring two gigantic letters. During the 75th founding anniversary of Hollywood, the new sign was revealed on November 11, 1978. The Hollywood Sign makes appearance in many movies and TV shows, particularly if the main plot is set in Los Angeles. Most movies show the sign being destroyed like in the movie Independence Day, The Terminator Salvation, Day After Tomorrow, and numerous other films. Other movies use the sign as an inspiration. Take for example the movie Shrek. In the movie, instead of showing the Hollywood Sign, there’s a Far Far Away Sign. Another popular building in L.A. is the Capitol Records Building. Like the Hollywood Sign, the building is seen in the movie The Day After Tomorrow. In the video game Grand Theft Auto, the Capitol Records appeared as Blastin’ Fools Records Building. In the game’s 2013 sequel, the building appeared once more. The commercial building is at 1750 Vine Street, and it stands thirteen-story tall. The headquarters of the leading recording company is designed by Welton Becket and Associates. California recognizes the circular building as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on November 15, 2006. Since its foundation in 1942, Capitol has more than a hundred recording artist and its current roster of talents include Katy Perry, 5 Seconds of Summer, Troye Sivan, Halsey, Britain’s Got Talent Calum Scott, Tori Kelly, Norah Jones, One Direction’s Niall Horan, and more. Because Los Angeles is Spanish for “The Angels,” surely, there’s also a landmark that would, of course, represent the angels of L.A. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels functions as the primary church for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The construction of the church began in 1998 and opened four years after. The cathedral was named after Our Lady of the Angels, a way to also reflect the first community established in L.A. The settlement was called El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles. In 1771, Junipero Serra, a Franciscan priest, started the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. The friar, along with the forty four other settlers, started a community on September 4, 1781. They named it El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles, or The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels’ in English. In 1820, the population went up to 650 residents. Today, the original community is memorialized at the oldest region of Los Angeles. If you want to take a look at the old L.A., visit the celebrated district of Los Angeles Pueblo PL.A.za and Olvera Street. The Los Angeles Plaza, or the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, is a 44-acre district where you will feel the old town L.A.. In this historic district, you will be able to see city’s plaza starting from the Spanish rule down to the United States rule, which happened after 1847. In 1953, California included El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument on their list of state-owned monuments. Not only that, on April 1, 1970, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission considered it one of the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments and listed it as PL.A.za Park. Two years after, the Los Angeles PL.A.za was added on National Register of Historic Places on November 3, 1972. The plaza is center of attention the historic park. Constructed during the 1820s, the pL.A.za was able to witness the Spanish rule that lasted until 1821. There are historical figures in the plaza: a) King Carlos III, the monarch who organized the instituting of the Los Angeles pueblo in 1780; b) Felipe de Neve, a former governor of California; c) Junipero Serra, the priest who founded the original Los Angeles town. One main part of the Los Angeles Plaza is the Olvera Street. If you visit the popular street, you will be able to see the Avila. Adobe, and the Sepulveda House. Olvera Street is placed directly east of Downtown L.A., next to Chinatown and the Union Station. The street filled with historic sites and diverse restaurants. If you are wondering what’s the oldest house in Los Angeles, well, it is the Avila. Adobe. The house was owned by Francisco Avila., and it was built in 1818. The Avila. Adobe is made of adobe bricks and covered with slanted cottonwood beams. Originally, the floor was just bare and nothing was covering the ground. Varnished floorings were added when it was renovated by the state of California. The original Avila. Adobe was longer than the restored version. It looked like the letter L because Francisco Avila. added a front porch and doorstep. So, if you plan to visit Olvera Street, don’t forget stop by its oldest residential house. The Avila. Adobe is #145 on the list of California Historical Landmarks. Another old-fashioned found in Olvera Street is the Sepulveda House.
