The Bay Area’s distinct characteristic is its architectural style and people would automatically associate the Victorian houses to the city. Located 1.25 miles away from the shores of San Francisco is the notorious Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The maximum federal prison is now closed. However, people can still go to the Alcatraz Island and visit the museum. The halls of the Alcatraz were had names like Broadway, Michigan Ave., and other famous American streets. Despite being a penitentiary, it is still one of San Francisco’s leading tourist attractions. Alcatraz would entice around 1.5 million visitors per year. You can join the Alcatraz Behind The Scenes Tour to more about the island’s deepest secrets, artifacts, and undisclosed rooms. A tourist destination that has it all is the Fisherman’s Wharf. The whole wharf neighborhood can offer tourists and locals a wide variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. For starters, you can visit the Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum, the Musee Mecanique, and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The Musee Mecanique, or Mechanical Museum in English, is an interactive museum that’s found at Fisherman’s Wharf. The unique feature about this museum is penny arcade games. Once you go inside, it feels like you are transported to the era before computer games. Go back in time through the 300 mechanical machines and artifacts. It is also acknowledged as one of the biggest game collections in the world! The owner started his collection at the tender age of 11 and he would display his game compilation at Playland during the 1920s. Sadly, the Playland ceased operting in 1972 so he decided to open his own gallery. Thus, the Musee Mecanique was born. To this day, the museum still stands at Fisherman’s Wharf and attracts over 100,000 visitors annually. The museum director shared that the Musee Mecanique will always have an emotional connection to the people who grew up playing with these coin-operated arcade games. It’s no wonder that the SF Weekly awarded it as the “Best Old-School Arcade.” In 2011, the U.S. News & World Report included the museum on their list of “Things to Do in San Francisco.” The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is where you learn about the place’s history along with the maritime vessels used in the past. For those who don’t know, the wharf got its name from an Italian immigrant. Achille Paladini was successful in his fishing business and was referred by many as the Fish King. His fellow Italians settled in an area near the wharf and they were also known for fishing local delicacies. Hence, their turf was called the Fishermen’s wharf. The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park occupies an area of 50 acres. The park was built on June 27, 1988, and since then, it welcomes more than 4 million visitors annually. On January 26, 1984, park was recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark with a formal name of Aquatic Park Historic District. Four years later, it was added on U.S. National Register of Historic Places and credited as the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Site. In the maritime park, you can take a walk at the Hyde Street Pier and examine the different fleets. You will find preserved boats such as the Balclutha, a sailing ship in 1886; Eureka, ferryboat in 1890 built steam; Hercules, a tugboat in 1907; and the USS Pampanito, a demilitarized submarine. If you are tired and need to recharge, their wharf’s Pier 39 is the perfect choice to feast. With its fresh seafood, you will surely be satisfied with the plethora of food choices. The pier’s hearty clam chowder served in a bread bowl will surely rejuvenate you. The seafood restaurant chain was influenced by the top-grossing movie. In 1996, The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Restaurant officially opened in cooperation with Viacom, the film distributor of Forrest Gump. Now, the restaurant chain has over 20 branches in the US, including the one at Fisherman’s Wharf. After a long day of exploring the Fisherman’s Wharf, be sure to stay because the wharf hosts many events of the city. The San Francisco Fleet Week is a fun activity for the entire family. For 3 consecutive days, the skies will be filled with jets and planes. For sure, you’ll be amazed by the different death-defying stunts. Aside from that, there’s the annual fireworks display on the 4th of July. Another famous structure in the city is the Golden Gate Bridge.
