In 1859, Denver gave away 53 parcels of land Peak Express so their community would have the region’s first wagon route. Peak Express offered mail and freight services. With the help of the Peak Express’ wagon service, deliveries would only take six days. In 1863, another mailing service arrived in Denver. Western Union cemented Denver’s supremacy over its neighbors. William Larimer’s dreams for Denver came true because when Denver formally became a city, it served as the country seat of the Arapahoe County Seat. Seven years later, Denver City was reduced to just Denver, and Denver officially became the state capital in 1867. The city continued to grow and it was able to entice the wealthy to move to Denver. One of the millionaires that made a mark was Horace Austin Tabor. He initiated building the city’s business district, and William Larimer opened the Tabor Grand Opera House. After that, more fancy hotels started to multiply, as well as the lavish estates for the elite. The World Youth Day was first instituted in 1985 by Pope John Paul II, and two years later, the first WYD happened in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Because of Denver’s significant contribution in the horticultural industry of the High Plains sector, Denver is also acknowledged as the “Queen City of the Plains.” It became the model city of the Western United States.
