North Carolina’s most populated metropolitan is the city of Charlotte. Aside from that, Charlotte is also the county seat of Mecklenburg County. The residents of the city are colloquially called “Charlotteans.” The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the city had an estimated the population of 859,035 residents. Historically, The first known inhabitants of Charlotte were the Catawba Native Americans. According to records, the tribe came around 1567 and they occupied the Mecklenburg County. By 1759, the Catawba population harshly fell because of a smallpox outbreak. At their highest point, there were more than 10,000 Catawba people. Unfortunately, by 1826, there only 110 tribe members left. Though Charlotte is an American city, it had a huge European population back when it started. Settlers from Northern Ireland, specifically the Scottish people, constituted the main starting population. Before the start of the American War of Independence, there was also a small number of German immigrants who moved to the area. In 1755, Charlotte started out as settlement area for Thomas Spratt and companions. They were all of European descent, and Spratt’s family occupied the Elizabeth neighborhood. Later, Thomas Polk, an American military officer and great-uncle of ex-president James K. Polk, decided to marry Spratt’s daughter. The couple built their new home near the Catawba Road. It is not just any road because it was “The Trading Path.” For centuries, the Native American tribes used that road for their extensive trade network. Later, both the Native Americans and European-American settlers occupied the main points of The Trading Path. The portion of the road that passes through the Carolina foothills was called the Upper Road, and the section that was between the state of Georgia and North Carolina was known as the Lower Cherokee Traders Path. Seven years prior to its incorporation, the town was named Charlotte in a way to honor the German princess Sophia Charlotte. In 1761, she officially became the Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. Thus, the town was known for its “Queen City” nickname. After Polk’s settling, the area was officially recognized as the town of Charlotte Town in 1768. The intersection in the Piedmont became the center of Uptown Charlotte. In 1770, the trading path from east to west became Trade Street, and the path from north to south was part of Tryon Street. The point where the two roads meet is called the Trade & Tryon or generally labeled today as The Square. In 1775, the local leaders signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Though Charlotte was not totally free from the British rule after that, it is still momentous date and residents celebrate it every May 20. Every year, Charlotte commemorates the date of the signing with a musket and cannon firing demonstration. The MecDec celebration is held annually in the Independence Square. Because of the country’s first gold rush during the 19th century, the Charlotte Mint was founded in 1837 founding of the. North Carolina became the prime gold producer in the US until the 1848 California Gold Rush. The Charlotte Mint was operating continuously until 1861. When it closed down, the historic building of the Charlotte Mint developed into the Mint Museum of Art. Charlotte also has another nickname when British commander General Charles Cornwallis said that the city was “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” because of the hostile residents. Hence, the city is known as “The Hornet’s Nest.” As a matter of fact, the professional basketball team of Charlotte is even called the Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte’s third nickname is “The City of Churches” because it was known as the birthplace of Southern Presbyterianism. During the 19th century, the city had several churches of different religious denominations, including Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic churches. In 1910, Charlotte exceeded Wilmington’s population and it became the biggest city in North Carolina. As the city became a hub for the various cotton processing plants and railroad companies, Charlotte experienced its first economic boom came. In 1920, Charlotte was not the largest city anymore. The title was given to Winston-Salem, which had 2,077 more residents than the city of Charlotte. During the 70s and 80s, Charlotte became known for its banking industry through the help of a finance guru named Hugh McColl. He was able to convert the North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) into a fierce competitor in the industry, and the bank eventually teamed up with the Bank of America. Because of this huge success, Charlotte became the second biggest company headquarters in the country, just next to New York City. >From 2004 to 2014, Charlotte was recognized as America’s fastest-growing metropolitan area, with an estimated population of 888,000 new residents. The Globalization and World Cities Research Network tagged Charlotte as a global city. Not only that, in 2018, CompTIA released their list of “Tech Towns” and Charlotte was awarded as the number 1 Tech Town across the US. The second place was earned by Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina. Today, the city has a lot of popular attractions, and some of them are professional leagues. If you are a fan of American football, you are familiar with the Carolina Panthers. Their games are played at the Bank of America Stadium and they are one of the few teams to have their own stadium. Before the Bank of America Stadium became the biggest outdoor arena, there was the American Legion Memorial Stadium. Located in the city’s Elizabeth community, the stadium boasts 17,000 seats and it is where The Charlotte Hounds play their professional lacrosse games. Other than that, the stadium is mainly used for various sporting events and other public activities.
