Read More The Pacific Northwest is popularly known as Cascadia. The geographic region includes the Greater Seattle, Greater Vancouver, and Greater Portland. The Portland metropolitan area is specifically focused on the city of Portland, and the MSA had estimated 2017 population of 2,453,168. Approximately 60% of the state’s population dwells within the Greater Portland area. Before American settlers came, Portland was ravaged by enormous floods. The pioneers were the tribes of the Clackamas and the Multnomah. The group began occupying the area during the 1800s. The Chinook people the first residents of that place that would eventually become the city of Portland. During the 1830s, more travelers occupied the Willamette Valley and they would make Oregon City their middle point. A decade later, a new community was established near the Willamette River. It was originally called “The Clearing” because a large number of trees were mowed down to welcome the new town. William Overton wanted to wanted to claim the land. However, he lack the needed funds to do so. In 1843, He made an agreement with Asa Lovejoy to split the 640-acre land just as long as he would help him acquire “The Clearing.” Two years later, Overton sold his half of the tract to Francis Pettygrove. The land’s owner are now Pettygrove and Lovejoy, and they decided to rename the town. They settled it by a tossing a coin. If Asa won, the name would be Boston. If Francis won, the town will be called Portland. In a game of three coin tosses, Francis won. Thus, “The Clearing” became “Portland.” Did you know that the coin is displayed on the Oregon Historical Society? The Portland Penny was found in Asa’s safe and since then, it’s preserved at the museum. On February 8, 1851, Portland was incorporated as a city. At that time, the city had only 800 inhabitants with establishments such as a hotel, a weekly newspaper, and a sawmill. By 1879, the population went up to 17,500, and by 1890, the population skyrocketed to 46,385 residents. Portland was the first city to own a steel bridge on the West Coast in 1888. The city earned its unofficial nickname of being “The City of Roses.” Because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Portland became a very progressive city, and it grew exponentially. Portland turned into the leading port in the Pacific Northwest region until the 1890s. The city was also known for its lumber industry because of the many Columbian pine trees, western hemlocks, red juniper cedars, and the bigleaf maple trees. Portland flourished of having a stature of being a tough and powerful town. Historians noted that the city is a descendant of New England, and the place for the expelled and extradited elite. Portland’s saloons, gambling dens, and lodging houses were filled with the California Gold Rush miners and seafarers staying at the city port. >From only having 100,000, the population in Portland escalated to 301,815 as of 1930. The Portland Expo Center hosts annual events, including livestock exhibition, trade shows, and other related conventions. The center is located on the northern edge of Portland. Because of the hippie counterculture of the 1960s, changes started to sprout Portland. The Crystal Ballroom transformed into the city’s center of the hippie culture. The Crystal Ballroom was constructed in 1913, but it rose to fame when it hosted concerts of famous performers such as Tina Turner, Blue Cheer, James Brown, and The Electric Prunes. In 1979, the legendary ballroom was included on the list of historic places. In 1997, the ballroom was restored by family-owned brewery after years of not being available to the public. The main ballroom repaired and it had an automated dance floor. The new owners also renovated the Alma Hotel, and the newly restored hotel is now the Crystal Hotel. The names of the 51 hotel rooms were the songs and concerts at the Crystal Ballroom. Throughout the 70s, Portland ingrained itself as a growing city. Indeed, it grew to because of the technological boom. Companies like Intel came to the city and invested around $10 billion. When the millennium period entered, more than 90,000 people were added to Portland’s population. Portland became the choice for young people, and it was next to Louisville, Kentucky as one of the cities to captivate a lot of college graduates and white-collar workers. From 2001 to 2012, the city’s GDP by increased by 50%. Since 2003, the official nickname of Portland is “The City of Roses” because it is an ideal location for blossoming roses. The park’s fences lampposts were designed by William Whidden. Mt. Tabor’s Reservoir 6 is the largest out of them all. The reservoir’s fountain reopened in 2007. The country’s most expansive wilderness park is found in Portland. The Forest Park, a 5,100-acre public park, is located at Multnomah, Portland. It is made up of hike and bike trails that spans 70 miles, including the Wildwood Trail. Aside from the intricate trail system, there over 110 birds and 60 mammals that frequently visit the Forest Park. If Portland is home to the largest urban forest in the US, it is also the place where you will find the world’s tiniest park. The Mill Ends Park was created in 1948, and it only occupies a land area of 0. 292 square miles. This miniature park is found in the heart of SW Naito Parkway. The Guinness Book of Records awarded it as the world’s smallest park in 1971. The city park structure of Portland has been recognized as one of the best in the country. A non-profit organization The Trust for Public Land gave Portland a ParkScore ranking of seven. This classification report was published in 2013, and cited that out of the 50 cities, Portland earned the seventh spot! The organization’s extensive research revealed that most of the Portlanders live near a park, and more than 16% of Portland’s land area is made up of rich vegetation. Portland is the county seat of Multnomah County. Being the biggest city of the state of Oregon, Portland occupies an area of 145 square miles. In 2017, it had a total population of around 647,800, earning the recognition of being the second-most crowded in the Pacific Northwest region.
